Aluminum-based PCBs, commonly known as metal-core PCBs or insulated metal substrates, have a metal core, usually aluminum, used to enhance heat dissipation performance. These circuit boards are crucial for managing heat challenges in high-power applications, such as LED lighting, automotive electronics, and power converters. Aluminum-based printed circuit boards consist of a four-layer structure, including copper foil, dielectric layer, aluminum substrate, and aluminum-based film. Aluminum-based printed circuit boards improve component performance and lifespan through efficient heat dissipation, making them the preferred choice for designs that require excellent thermal management.

Main Advantages

  • Durability and Reliability: Aluminum-based PCBs offer outstanding strength and durability, reducing the risk of damage during manufacturing, handling, and daily use compared to traditional materials such as ceramics or fiberglass. This robustness ensures a longer service life for devices and enhances overall reliability.

  • Enhanced Heat Dissipation: Aluminum has excellent thermal conductivity, enabling efficient removal of heat from critical components, protecting them from damage due to overheating. This feature is crucial for maintaining the performance and lifespan of high-power electronic devices by minimizing thermal stress.

  • Environmental Sustainability: Aluminum-based PCBs stand out for their eco-friendly characteristics. Aluminum is both recyclable and non-toxic, aligning with the concept of green manufacturing, and the entire lifecycle from production to assembly is energy-efficient, thereby making a significant contribution to environmental protection efforts.

  • Cost-Effectiveness: The abundance of aluminum makes it an economical choice for PCB manufacturing. Its ease of extraction and processing reduces production costs, making aluminum PCBs a cost-effective solution for a variety of applications, from LED lighting to automotive systems.

Performance of Aluminum-Based PCBs

  • Heat Dissipation Efficiency: Compared with traditional FR4 PCBs, aluminum-based PCBs perform excellently in thermal management. The thermal resistance of aluminum ranges from 1°C/W to 2°C/W, while FR4 is 20°C/W to 22°C/W. Aluminum-based PCBs can achieve rapid heat dissipation, significantly improving the safety and stability of components.

  • Dimensional Stability: Aluminum-based PCBs exhibit outstanding dimensional stability. When the temperature increases from 30°C to 140°C or 150°C, its dimensional change is minimal, only about 2.5% to 3.0%, ensuring consistent performance under different conditions.

  • Excellent Thermal Expansion Control: The thermal expansion coefficient of aluminum is very close to that of copper, allowing aluminum-based PCBs to minimize issues related to thermal expansion and contraction. This feature ensures the lifespan and reliability of surface-mounted components and the entire device.
